SAD Is Among Us
Seasonal depression is natural, embrace it.
As November has crept up on all of us, we begin to prepare for those months where the weather is unbearable, our parents go nuts over holiday planning, and we bust our tails at work to be able to afford a gift or two for the people that we love.
Some call it the best time of the year, while others fall back into those deep holes of being cooped up until the winter months are over. Call it what you want, but those who know what I'm referring to call it Seasonal Affective Disorder, otherwise known as Seasonal Depression. For those of you who know Broad City, you'll remember back to the episode with Ilana's SAD light, which I have heard is effective for some.
While SAD lights may work, I always wonder why the push for "curing" the seasonal depression. It gets cold outside and only the earth can control that - it's a natural cause. With that in mind, humans wanting to avoid the cold seems to be natural too.
Aside from dodging the cold weather, the majority of us tend to get overwhelmed with all of the holiday cheer. Families clash, banks are drained, and routines are thrown around during the holidays. However, tradition tells us that holiday season is just part of life. So, naturally some of us enjoy the holidays, but only an extent of them.
They say that too much of anything will kill you. You're probably thinking, "This dramatic piece about the holidays killing you, YEAH RIGHT" or you know exactly what I'm talking about, but don't want to admit it because your grandma would cringe knowing that waking up Christmas morning was no longer what you looked forward to all year.
Whether seasonal depression holds you back or not, embrace it. If you're the type that hides out for days on end watching an entire series, so be it. If you're only semi affected and the majority of it includes ditching the holiday party for your bed, then embrace that too.
There's no shame in avoiding social interactions for a few months especially when it's too cold to feel your face or when every store appears as though Santa threw up on it. Order that UberEats directly to your door, watch the entire SVU series, or better yet just catch up on some much needed zzz's - you'd be lying if you said you didn't need it. Let's be real, we all need it.
