A Freaking Border Wall

While most people may read this headline and think "Not another one!" I am completely unbothered by these opinions at this point.

A border wall was an idea that our president introduced, although other politicians have also entertained the idea before. However, it has only recently come to light how serious this border wall might be.

Like most Americans, I do believe that there should be a policy for tighter border security. But I don't understand the need for a wall to be physically built.

The majority of those who want into our country do so for a better life. This idea that people only want to come here to harm others is incorrect and practically insane. A few bad people should not speak for all. Ever.

Americans are patriotic; they love this country. We say, "America is the best country! It's the best place on earth!" Knowing that everyone feels this way, why would other people not want to feel this way too? Because our country is so great, we should welcome others to also enjoy this greatness.

Today, because our president didn't get to begin building his wall, he shut the government down. Because the government is not operating, there are people who are not going to get paid this week, our national forests and parks are not being monitored or taken care of, our food is not being tested and approved properly, and our airports may not be secured properly. Everyone's safety is at risk. How much longer until our country is up and running again?

Instead of creating a wall to keep immigrants out, why not have a better system in place for helping the immigrants who are seeking a better life? Why are we dead set on keeping immigrants out of this country? Keeping those who will harm and hurt others out is more than understandable, but driving away those who are looking for better opportunities is far from understandable.

A border wall is not the answer to the immigration problem America is facing. While it isn't as black and white as allowing safe people in versus not allowing bad people in, we have many trained personnel who can perform their job without the need for a wall.
