“New Year, New Me”
"New year, New me" is overrated and not realistic. Make changes today instead of waiting until January 1 of every year.
With less than 48 hours to go until 2019 begins, I am beginning to wonder how many times I will see a post such as, "New year! New me!" because we all know that there are those people who convince themselves every year that they will suddenly become a brand new person, just because another 365 days have passed.
While like many, I am a firm believer in making resolutions for the new year, I don't necessarily think that saying you will become a new person is accurate. Although it may just be another cute saying that people like to use underneath their selfies, it feels inaccurate.
What person just suddenly becomes someone brand new when the next year starts? Slim to none.
If one were to think literally about this saying then it may make better sense. It is actually quite rare that someone becomes someone else right when January 1 hits. Unless this said person was to work with the government to create a new identity and destroy their old one - but again, doesn't that only happen in the movies?
A new year should not motivate people to cut out bad habits or crappy behavior. Nobody should choose to wait until a new year comes around to be better - whether that's with dieting, biting the nails too often or even staying in a relationship that is boring. A new year shouldn't be the reason that someone decides to stop making poor decisions. The realization that a decision was poor should be the reason that a person decides to change or be better.
The big grand celebrations that everyone has on New Year's Eve should be about celebrating the year that is over. Celebrate the lives that were lost in that year. Celebrate the accomplishments that were made in that year. Celebrate that you made it another year while some didn't.
With all of that being said, don't let 2019 be the reason that you stop eating Taco Bell every day. Stop eating Taco Bell every day because you know that it's not good for you. Don't wait for January 1 to make changes for yourself, make them today.
And for all of you peppy folks who love the "New year", "New me" saying, don't take offense to this either. Just be realistic about the upcoming year. Face it, you're not going to become a brand new person unless you're working with the government or you know a guy that knows a guy.
Otherwise, happy new year readers.
