Why is Everyone So Concerned with Others?

Live and let live, we have more common ground than we may realize.

As we near the end of 2018, I'm beginning to wonder what 2019 has in store for all of us. The end of every year doesn't just mean holidays, cold weather, and the upcoming tax season. It also means leaving bad habits in the ending year and practicing good habits for the upcoming year.

It feels like recently, and maybe it's always been this way, but that we are all actually so concerned with what every other person is feeling, believing, and even thinking. When did people become so worried about others? And, why? If other people's thoughts or beliefs aren't directly affecting another person, then why does it matter what others are thinking or believing?

Each person on this earth bleeds the same color blood, no matter what color their skin might be. Each person on this earth has a body that is made up of the same organs as every other person on this earth. And, each person is a human.

If your neighbor believes in abortions, does that really directly affect you? If your coworker thinks that two men should be allowed to be married, does that have any effect on how your day goes? I'll admit, there are some things here and there that may directly affect another person - gun rights and control, tax cuts, and immigration. But, if someone believes something that has no effect on you, why do you care?

Lately, we have all been living in an era where it feels as though people are not allowed to love whoever their heart chooses. Loving another person shouldn't be about anyone other than the two people that love each other, and it should only be about the love itself. It seems almost ... creepy, to care so much about who others love? We don't love others in order to appease other people's beliefs. We love others because it feels wonderful.

Aside from loving others, people that concern themselves with ideas or beliefs that don't directly affect them is disheartening. If every person on this earth were made the exact same then life would be incredibly boring. If everyone thought the same and believed the same ideas, then wouldn't life be dull? Hell, it is 2018. Why is being/thinking/believing differently so bad? If every single woman thought the exact same way, then what would be special about the one that you chose to marry? And, vice versa - If every man believed the same ideas, then how would you determine which one you'd have children with one day?

While 2019 might not yet be the year where everyone stops worrying so much about others, it is a step forward into the future. Humans need to shed the habit of living in the past and begin practicing living in the future. Love others. Don't concern yourself with something that doesn't concern you. Let other people live their lives without fearing hatred. Recognize that we're literally all humans.
